Depending on your state, you may have a big problem. The paper trail is extremely important in vehicle transactions. How can you be sure that the vehicle is not stolen, or there is an unpaid lien on the vehicle. I suggest you contact your local DMV for help with this one. You can also go to www.dmv.org and click on your state for quick information. |

If you didnt get a title, You gave some guy a bunch of money for nothing. Because if he owns the title, he can come take the car at any time and say he didnt sell it to you. YOU NEVER buy a car without a title. Go ask for it. If he wont give it to you, Make him write up a bill of sale, including the vin number and any other information on the car necessary and bring it to the DMV. You never know. If he doesnt have a title, it could be stolen.

So technically you don't own the vehicle. I don't now for sure but this might not even be a legal sale in some states.
Call your local (state) DMV and they can tell you _exactly_ what needs to be done. I've called DMV offices several times in the past and actually they are quite helpful over the phone. |

You don't, you need to properly released title to register/title the car in your name. A car without a title is worthless, why would you make a purchase like this? You'll need to contact the person you bought from and ask them where the title is, and why they didn't give it to you at the time of purchase. If the response is that a lien is in place, and they don't have the title, then they legally couldn't sell the car, and you will be walking. |
