I just knocked a brick wall over in my car...is it worth claiming on my insurance?

You are better claiming on you car insurance ,on some policy you are allowed to claim without it infecting your no claim es .

Between the damage to the brick wall and your car...you need to file the claim. You owe for the wall too, not just your car.

The cost of claiming on the insurance is not just at your next renewal. It is also how long after that you will be loaded / not benefitting from a no claims bonus. Rule of thumb, pay hundreds yourself, claim thousands on insurance. And protect your no claims as soon as you can.

First get a quote for both the repair of the wall and then the bumper, then decide.

bumper would be 2 to 3 hundred plus paint and labour
the wall get a quote from a couple of builders
but if you can then i would not go through insurance as they might not pay up

people always freak out about insurance rates and dont realize what they get themselves into when they try to handle damage out of pocket.

Even the smallest little dent in a bumper will cost hundreds of dollars after repair time, paint time, supplies, labor... not to mention you owe for the damage of the wall.

Save yourself time, money, and hassle and use insurance for what its there for. Yes, youll probably see an increase... of like 50 dollars over a 6 month policy.. but seriously.. do you really think your policy is going to increase by like thousands of dollars or something?!

Is the wall yours? If so, you can't claim for it off your car insurance. You can claim for the damage to your car on your comp insurance, that's fine, it's accidental damage.

However, if the wall is on your property you will have to claim for it off your home insurance as your car insurance will not cover this damage.

No one can tell you how much your insurance will go up apart from your insurance company or broker depending on how you bought your insurance.

Also, could the Americans please stop replying in these questions!! We have completely different laws over here and your answers are just not relevant.

If I opened the doors, and found a brick wall in my car, I would probably knock it over too, and get it out of the vehicle. I mean the nerve of some people, building a brick wall in my car.

Use the insurance, man! You're paying month after month after month for protection, and now that you need it you're wondering if you should use it!?

Most of the time unless the damage is over $2000, its worth fixing yourself. Insurance companies always win in the long run.

B4 you file the claim, find out if it will go down as a comprehensive claim. (you have to do this on the sly, if you call the 1800# for claims, they will put down a $0 claim on your record!)
If it will be a comprehensive claim then do it! They usually will not raise your rate at all. If it does, than switch companies. They don't look at comp. claims when you are switching.
