They put their own tag on it, just to get it home until they go to the tag office on Monday. But I saw them driving around town illegally Fri. night. Can I get in trouble if they do something stupid like wreck it or get pulled over?

In some states you need to notify the DMV of the sale of a vehicle, within a certain period of time. In others you do not. As long as you have the buyer's information, you should not be responsible for their actions. You may want to turn in the tags that you had on the vehicle, or transfer them to another vehicle (at DMV) as soon as possible! |

Most states (you didn't mention yours) have a form you fill out and send it telling then you sold your vehicle and who you sold it to, and that takes the responsibility off you. There may be a small filing fee to pay.

If you filed the Seller's Report of Sale, or the Notification of Sale with your state, you should be protected. If you failed to file this document, any illegal activity involving the vehicle, can and will come back to haunt you. |

If y'all wrote a bill of sale and you made 2 copies and you have one don't even sweat it. If they paid you with a check don't sweat it. When you signed over the title did you have it notarized? that right there would give you a witness to the sale. One out of three and your in the clear.One more thing if they do something stupid, which they already did by putting their tag on it and by driving it.When the stupid thing happens it has their tag, registered to them. You have your tag (don't you) registering that truck to you. Even though you no longer have an ice cream truck, your COOL. |
