I just totalled my first car. Why does it feel as though I lost a member of the family?

I find myself missing my car. I just found out today that it is a total loss from my insurance company.
Additional Details
I've had the car for four years. It was a blue Mazda Protege.

Many people feel that their 1st car is the most important because its when you first get to just drive your way into freedom!!! i am srry that you lost your car....something similar happend to my trauck & i wasnt even driving it!!!

Your first car is sort of like your first love. You never forget it. Others may come along that are newer or faster or shinier -- but none can match that first set of wheels for the memories.

My first car (lo those many years ago) was a 1964 Volkswagon Beetle. I called it the Humbug.

It was old. It didn't work right half the time. And I loved it. It'd conk out at the most inconvenient times -- and my friends and I pushed it through the middle of the little town where I lived more times than I can count.

I've owned a lot of cars since -- and haven't felt the same kind of attachment to a single one of them.

It sounds like it was a sort of status symbol for you. Also, people get used to having something that's very dependable... Kind of like comming home to a big fluffy feather bed (?) Or the smell of good food cooking in the kitchen, and "Fluffy" greeting you at the door.........
It's a big loss and a change that you hadn't planned on!!
BUT...... You'll be surprised how exciting it will end up being to have a "change"..
Since it was a car (Not "Fluffy"etc.) ~ It will soon turn out to be more of an inconvenience then anything else....
Have fun picking out a new (different) car!!!
The rest will be just one of many experiences you'll go through in your life.

because it was your first car. like, my fiance just sold his first truck for scrap (because thats all it was good for really) and he said the exact same thing, that it felt like he was loosing part of his family.
