I'm 16 years old. I'm pretty much on my own here. I don't have a dad, and me and mom don't talk. But I want to get a cheap car and move out..
I live in Texas. I looked up the number for the public Public Safety Department downtown. I have a few questions
-Can I just go by myself? Or do I need someone older?
-How do I study for the test. Is there a book or movie I can buy online, or do they give you one there? (if there is something I can order online, Id really prefer that.)
- How long do I have to study?
- If I pass the test. How long does it take to get my license?
- I don't exactly have copies of my social security card and birth certificate laying around. So how and where can I get a copy?
- Anything I need to know?
(please don't tell me to get my mother to help. You don't know her. You want an idea of our relationship? We live in the same house, yet the last conversation we had was When she called and told me she had a appointment and needed to sleep over night at the doctors office for some sleeping test. That was 6 days ago, we haven't said a word to each other since. Shes out of the picture. if I need an adult. I'll have to get one of my older friends.)

If you are under 18 & trying to get your permit, you will need to have a parent or legal guardian go with you to DPS to sign the paperwork. It cannot be an adult friend, it has to be a parent of legal guardian, there is no way around that.
If you show up with someone other than a parent or legal guardian, DPS will just turn you away.
Driver's training is also mandatory for those under 18 & you will need to find a driving school to take Driver's Ed or find a state approved on-line course to get your training. |

At 16 years old you cannot get a drivers permit or license in any state without a parent or legal guardian accompanying you to the DMV. A friend won't help a bit. |
