Find answers to your legal question.

I lost my license recently, can i still go driving without it? ?

I heard that you can go driving without your license as long as when pulled over you provide your SSN#. Is this true? Or will you just get laughed at and fined?

I just lost my wallet, i dont know where. Im completely legal to drive.
I heard that you can provide your ssn and no fine. but in the state of Michigan i have heard different, that you will just be fined. Which is true?

It is illegal to drive without your license on your person. For any reason a police officer requests to see your license when you are driving, you are to be able to produce it for him to see. Failure to be able to produce a license can result in a citation if the officer chooses to do so.

If you provide your SSN & date of birth, the officer can get your complete license history over the radio or from their in-car computer if they use that system & on occasion, they will not issue a citation if your license comes back clean or they may just issue a fix-it citation requiring you to report & physically show your license, then the citation is then signed off & dismissed.

The cost to get a replacement license is not expensive & is definitely less than the possible citation you can receive.

EDIT: Northernlad, please show a court case history to back your (false) claim. There is NO STATE WITHIN THE UNITED STATES that you have a legal right to drive. In all 50 states it is only a PRIVILEGE- nothing more. Not one state has any laws that states they MUST provide you a license to drive. Please provide actual factual information to back your claim. And since I know you cannot do so, I won't hold my breath waiting for concrete proof that will back your alleged claim.

no license mean no drive really easy if it wasnt no one need license and anyone could drive and ssn is not going to help pay the ticket

Yes you will be laughed at but not by the cop who pulled you over but by the person who told you that. As a matter of fact they are probably laughing right now. Seriously, you have to just go to the DMV and get a duplicate. Does your state have digital licenses yet? If so, you won't need too much in the way of ID to get one.. That's because they have your digital photo on file. When you tell them your name and date of birth, your image would pop right up.When you go there they will give you a receipt which is used as a temporary D/L. This will be your proof to show the cops.

You go to the revenue office and get it replaced for like $20. They already have your picture on file..... and it will keep you out of huge fines.

You atleast need a temporary license issued from traffic department, otherwise, you will get fines when you are caught driving

When you say "lost it" - do you mean dropped it somewhere and can't find it, or do you mean a court or police officer took it away from you? If it was taken, then you are not allowed to drive at all.

If you really misplaced it, then it depends on state law - some states allow you a certain amount of time to produce a valid license before a "driving without a license" charge takes effect - some don't. If I were you, I'd make my first trip without my license down to the license branch to get it replaced.

There are people who fight the legality of requiring a driver's license for personal travel. Under the Constitution, driving for personal travel is a right not a privilege and it is a violation of your constitutional rights for states to require you carry a license.
