Find answers to your legal question.

I parked my car in a Supermarket Car Park. 3 days later I received a bill stating that I had to pay £70.?

Seemingly I had left my car in the car park for more than one and a half hours allowed hence the £70 fine. The letter also states that if I pay quickly I will only have to pay £45. I think this letter was from the company that runs the car park for the supermarket company.
Is the company within its rights to fine me £70.
Where do I stand legally.
Should I pay this £70 fine to the supermarket car park company or not.
I would much appreciate some advice on what to do.
THANKS.

It is legal
it is also not uncommon. the car park will have had signs, warning of the penalties.
you can try writing to the supermarket. If you can prove that you spent a long time on the shop (do they have an in-store cafe?) - perhaps with a very big till receipt, they *may* ask the car park company to quosh the charge.
more than likely you will have to pay

They should have signs around the car park stating this, so it looks like you will have to pay up.

Supermarket car parks are private land not public space. If you leave your car there then you do so under the conditions of the landowner. Those conditions must be displayed clearly and usually are. Legally, it the conditions were clearly displayed and you stayed longer than you were supposed to then yes, under the imlicit contract, you owe them the money. If you dont pay they can take you to court - which might mean you end up paying their legal costs too and can affect you adversely in all sorts of ways like your credit rating etc. So if you did indeed stay too long - and the implication is that you know you did - then pay and quickly. If you didnt then it might end up being their word vs yours - you'd need some reasonable evidence to support your case. But in that case try calm negotiation first as court costs can be v expensive.

Seems a bit excessive for a parking fine... How long did you leave your car there?

I would take this bill directly to the supermarket manager and tell him that unless he does something about this obvious rip off, then he has just lost a valuable customer.

That receipt idea is good! If you write them a letter saying why you were there longer - make it up, say you were sick - they might let you off. I've done it and been let off a few times. What these supermarkets do is completely unethical, they don't care about people, just money. I would definately try the idea with the receipt, too. Make a big enough fuss, threaten to shop somewhere else. Usually stores don't have tapes in their cameras. Even if they did, they aren't going to trawl through all the footage for a parking fine, it aint worth their while. You could say you were ages at the cheese counter, then ages at the till, complain that it took this long to shop, then you get a ticket! That web site link is very interesting also.

If there were signs stating this then it's legal.
I bet you went around the town centre is well, the car park is free for supermarket customers ONLY.

Go see the super market manager ,he my let you off if you shop there regular ,one hour and a half is not a long time to do a weekly shopping trip

One and a half hours?!!! Flipping eck, it can take me two and half hours to get round the supermarket. What a scam. Check to see if they have signs up in the car park. If they do then I don't think there's much you can do. You could try ignoring it and see what happens. I know that in the past when I have got tickets in hospital car parks they do not bother chasing you up for it. Whatever happens, I would NOT shop in that supermarket again. After all, they make enough off you when you shop there. Cheeky gits. Also write to the supermarket telling them you will not be returning and you will advise everyone you know to do the same.

do you know anyone who shopped at the supermarket that day? if so - borrow their receipt and go to the relevant people and say 'oi you. why are you charging me to use your flippin supermarket'. get them to delete the fine
hey presto
