you candrive both a 7.5 ton and 3.5 ton

your partner can only drive a 3.5 ton

just to back myself up (cause i hate the thumbs down from people who dont know what they are talking about)

this is from a truck hire company website;-

Q) Do I need a special licence to drive a large van or mini bus?
A) You may drive vehicles up to and including 7.5 ton GVW on your normal driving licence. For all vehicles in excess of 7.5 ton GVW, you will require the relevant HGV licence. NB. Any vehicle exceeding 7.5 ton may only be hired to you on your own insurance.
Drivers who passed their driving test since January 1997 are ONLY eligible if they have passed a seperate HGV test. Please note that this also applies to vehicles exceeding 9 seats, i.e. minibuses. If you passed your test prior to January 1997, you may drive up to a 19 seat vehicle, but post January 1997 see's the 9 seat clause being imposed.

anyone read it yourself here......

You can drive both on your licence. Your partner can drive up-to 3.5 only. this applies to UK. Quick way to make sure check on your licence it will tell you what classes you are able to drive. :)

If you passed your Category B car test BEFORE January 1st 1997, you can drive a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes gross weight.

If you passed your car test AFTER January 1st 1997, you can only drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. To drive anything larger, you need to pass a Category C or C1 (the old H.G.V. Class 2).

Call your local drivers license bureau or whatever you call it in the UK and they'll tell you everything you need to know.

There was a change, on 1st January 1997. Have a look on DVLAs website for the relevant categories.

Hi there,

Have a look at this site http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022499

It is the government website direct.gov.uk which explains what you can drive.

Without being able to see your licence (it should tell you what category you can drive) i imagine, you can drive either on your original licence (as you will have been given the right when you passed - now known as grandfather rights), but you partner wont be able to drive either unless he takes a seperate test as the automatic entitlement was removed on 1st jan 1997.

In short if you have a C1 entitlement, you may drive up to 7.5tonnes.

Hope this helps

You need to do a driving course to drive HGV's in the UK. My brother recently did one.

I doubt it. I think you need a whole other license for heavy goods vehicles. Check the DVLA website.
