I rear ended someone, and in panic forgot to get her information. What can or should I do?

This is my first ever accident. I was probably going about 5mph when it happenend, there was no damage to me. And the only damage to her car was two scratches. Nothing to serious, she even laughed about it. I gave her my information and than got back into my car, and than when it hit me I had to get hers, she was already driving off. I tried catching up by she was up ahead of me by a light, and I lost her. I'm wasn't too worried because I figured the damage is not bad at all, but than friends started telling me all these things on how I can get a lawsuit and get some kind of 5 grand bill from the insurance. Also will this cause my insurance go up?

Don't worry so much. They can charge your insurance company for the accident for actual repairs or if they're crooks for fake repairs. But you'll have to pay the deductable with your insurance company that you have set up. Lawsuits can happen with any accident, it's true, but don't let it scare you. That's why you have insurance. Plus it wasn't report to the local PD at the time, so the odds of her getting any lawsuit or VERY VERY slim.

I would let your insurance know about it. If they don't have to pay anything, you don't have to worry about it. She has your information, if she wants to contact you, she will.

Don't worry. If you rear-ended her and you gave her all of your info, you'll more than likely be hearing from her insurance company before too long.

Also, any accident where you are at-fault can cause your rates to go up ... especially if you're a young driver.

if you were at fault, you will find out all too soon who she is because she is going to file a claim against your insurance. it could make your premiums go up depending on how much your company has to pay out. if its your 1st accident and its a small claim, it may not affect your premium at all.

Just contact your insurance Co. and let them know what happened. If she makes a claim against your insurance it could go up. You could tell them you'd like her info to handle it yourself if you like, but make sure she gets more than one estimate on the damages! Three is normal. Next time, if there is one, ALWAYS call the police. They make sure the correct info is being exchanged and are witness to any injury's or not. I had a guy rear end me and he gave me false info and then I found out he was wanted by the police! She could all of a sudden decide to say she got injured in the accident. If this happens, just let your insurance handle it! Hope this is your last! Good Luck

Don't worry. if no police was called, so will probably do nothing. If she does, your insurance agent will call you.

Since it's your fault, her insurance will not fix your car, so her info is not important. She will file a claim for her repairs on your insurance. They will probably call you to ask about the details.
Of course horrible things could happen. She could now total her car and blame it on you and you have no proof otherwise, but why would she want to do that? It's probably nothing to worry about.
And yes, your insurance will probably go up a bit as it does after every incident.

Sorry to say...you are pretty screwed at this point. You only hope is that she really is a nice person and didn't care about the minimal damage. Best case, you never hear from her again. I had that happen to me. Worst case, she turns around and files a claim against you, in which case yo uwill have to fess up and pay the bill. Unless it is reported, it will have no impact on your insurance premiums

She may just blow it off. but in the best case, I guess you take pictures and report it to your insurance company and let them know the details. If there is a claim, you'll probably pay a little more if it's small and a first time.

Sorry to hear you had an accident. I think as long as she has your information it will be OK. Her insurance company will contact you insurance company so that they can take care of any and all damages. Your insurance probably will go up...but just Little. As long as your insurance is good, everything should be OK. Good luck to you.

Don't worry too much, it would have been best to get her insurance information, but if you were 100% at fault then it is no big deal. I don't think that she would go through the insurance companies, if the damage is as minimal as you stated. She would just call you up and ask that you pay the damages, as they should be pretty inexpensive.

I wouldn't tell your insurance company unless you feel that she will get he company involved.

Dont worry, she is th eone that needs it in case she claims to her insurance, they will contact your insurance and eal with the issue.
It would be bad if you were rear ended or someone hit you and you don;thave thier information. Good thing you were going slow keep it like that safe driving pays off!
Cheers

you'll get her info when she files her claim, in most places whoever rear ends whoever is the one at fault and yes your insurance is likely to change a little. don't sweat it until something happens though she may not even file and then you've worried and lost sleep for nothing. Good luck!

Were there any witnesses? Sometimes people put ads in the local paper asking for witnesses. Otherwise, you may have to wait until she contacts you. Sorry. Good luck and God Bless!

If you are really concerned, you should file an accident report with the police and then inform your insurance company. If it was a small accident and they other driver is honest, small accidents under a few thousand dollars of damage usually do not cause your insurance to go up. If they claim it was bigger than it was, then you will have to see how the insurance company chooses to settle it.

Your insurance company will contact you when and if she files a claim. Her information will be given to you at that time

In about 6 months when she gets out of the hospital you will receive a summons to appear in court. Give this info to your insurance if they have not already had a claim submitted. Expect your rates to go up drastically for about 4 years. Make sure if this happens again you follow some simple rules,
1. Call the police to work up the accident
2. Never say you are sorry. That is an admission of guilt.
3. Never admit guilt.
4. Get all of their information.
5. Notify your insurance immediately.
6. Get the other person's information while the police are still there. Make sure he has a license and insurance and is driving legally. Sometimes the police will give him a break and that can make all the difference as to if you are responsible for the wreck or not.
7. NEVER SAY YOU ARE SORRY! Never say you are sorry in any shape form or fashion, like I'm sorry you are hurt or I'm sorry this happened. This WILL be used against you in court. and IS an admission of guilt. I cannot emphasize this enough.

With that in mind, stop following people so closely.

Is there a police report, she will need one to turn anything in to her insurance company. Were the police even called, did she leave the scene of a property damage accident. I would not worry much were I you. Also it may be a very good idea to contact your insurance company and let them know what happened.

Before your memory fades - write down all the details of the accident. All the details of what was said between the two of you.

If you are really really worried - have the above notarized and Dated so you can verify when you wrote this all down.

After that - all you can do is wait and see if you rear-ended an honest person or somebody who will try and take advantage.
