You go to the police department, or whoever you pay the parking tickets, and show them your proof of selling the car. You did have the buyer sign a release form that you kept, didn't you? Lesson for everyone selling a car. If your state does not have pre-made release forms, make one. It should should show: Make, Model, Year, License plate number, VIN and date sold. Print out 2 copies, have everyone involved sign it. Give one to the DMV and keep one. This will prevent or protect you from this kind of situation. |

If you surrendered your plates to DMV then yes you can fight it and say that you sold the car but if you sold it to the guy and allowed him/her to drive with them then your basically screwed. Unless you can track that person down but its going to be hard. |

You did not say which State you are in but in California, the SELLER must report sale of the car to DMV within 10 days of the transaction, and then they are covered in case of liability. |

Did you let them keep your plates with the car? If so that was your mistake-never ever do that.Always get the plates off of a car as soon as you sell it. Dont listen to someones hard luck story about wanting to use your plates until they can get it registered in their name-if they can afford to buy the car they can afford to get their own plates. You will probably have to go to court to get this straightened out. |
