I want to buy a car on Sunday evening, but my insurance office will be closed. Can I still drive away the car?

I intend to buy a car this coming Sunday, around 6pm. However, my insurance agent (Farmer's) is apparently closed. On my statement it says to call my own agent to add insurance, but he's only in his office M-F 9-5. Can I still get the car and drive it off the lot? Do I need to arrange insurance beforehand, even though I am not 100% sure I will be buying the car (it could sell before I have a chance to bid on it!)? Do I get it from a different insurance company that's open 24/7, and then switch a few days later?

Advise your agent before hand that you are possiblly going to be purchasing a car. They can add a temporary provision for you. this will cover the car until you can contact them monday with the Vin and other information.

Virtually all insurance companies will give automatic coverage when you buy a car. They realize that the deal may be done "after business hours". Just call them as soon as you can after you get the car and give them the information. I would bring a card or something from another vehicle to show you do have coverage in case you are stopped.

if you are going to pay the full cost of that car, yes, you may drive it. hopefully nothing will happen. if you are getting a loan from a bank or dealer, they will want you to have insurance. you may buy insurance online 24/7 and switch later.

check your policy, call your agent to confirm this, but your policy will cover any car you buy after hours, as long as you call 'em & give 'em the particulars (the VIN) soon as practicable.

Most dealerships will not sell you a car without insurance and most states will not let you get license plates for the car without proof of insurance. Get the VIN, make, model and year of the auto and call your agent tomorrow and tell him that you need an insurance binder issued for the car and either have him FAX it to the dealership or go and pick it up. That will be enough to drive the car and get license plates.

you can all ahead like tomorrow and tell them what your going to do ,usually you have a grace period of a few days so you should be ok,but they will be open tomorrow ,so id call the car lot or go by and get the serial number for it and add it to my insurance if your sure your going to buy it,that would be simple enough to do,good luck.

It won't be insured.

You could call the farmer's agent tomorrow, and ask him, would he bind coverage effective Sunday, if you call him first thing Monday morning with all the info. I've done that LOTS. But GET IT IN WRITING tomorrow, even if he just shoots you an email.

You do NOT have "automatice coverage" for the new car under your policy, unless you are trading in an existing car - in which case, you get exactly the coverage on the old car, and you STILL have to notify the agent within 30 days.

No. If you were to be pulled over or get into an accident, that would be expensive mistake.

If it turns out that you do NOT buy the car, you can cancel it the next day. Insurance for 2 days is not that expensive. A $1000 insurance only comes out to about $3 per day.
