I was involve in an side-swipe, hit-and-run accident with a person with no insurance or drivers license.The driver was at fault. They tried to flee the accident but I chased them down in my damaged car. I did get a description and license plate number off the vehicle, then reported it to the police. The driver asked me not to report it to the police but, I did anyway to cover myself and for insurance reasons. I did report an insurance claim and got a police report done that same day. The driver did leave the scene because they were afraid of getting arrested. How will my insurance policy cover this situation and will it cover my car repairs and rental car expenses. I do have UM coverage on my policy . Please help!!!

Most UM policies sold are for medical coverage, so read your policy. In any case, your collision policy will take care of your vehicle and your insurer will attempt to recover your deductible along with the entire cost of repairs from the other party. |

UM is a medical coverage- not a property coverage. So, if thats what you have... sorry, no deal.
UMPD is a property coverage... if you have that.. it will cover it. (Collision would cover it at well) |

Moer than likely your insurance company will repair your car and then sue the other driver. You were smart to report it and make a police report. Happy to hear nobody was hurt. I am surprised he was not arrested for driving without a license and insurance also for leaving the scene of an accident.

If you have Comp/Collision, file with your insurance company, and they will pay for it. |

This same event happened to me last year. I did file the claim on my coverage (UM coverage). The insurance company repaired my vehicle and in fact did track down the other driver and sued them for the money. |

Pay the deductible and your insurance should take care of it.
I guess its a good thing we have cops to report these type of things to y'know the ones that..... "give the innocent people a hard time and let troublemakers run wild and free" using your own quote of course.

As long as you have comp/coll on your policy, your repairs will be taken care of. And that is awesome that you chased the lowlife down, freakin' losers making your life difficult cuz they don't have any morals, ethics or a backbone! |
