If/when you are 18, you will not need the driver's training course or permit.

However, for insurance purposes, most States no longer allow insurance companies to discriminate by age of drivers. Thus, they now get around that by using "years of licensing experience" in their underwriting guidelines. Therefore, two drivers at the age of 18 can have two different insurance rates will all other factors being equal. The driver who obtained a provisional license at 16 will now have 2 years of driving experience when he/she turns 18 and will be a better insurance risk. Therefore, for any parents that have teenagers that they will not allow to drive until they are 18, my sound advice is to have them get their licenses at 16, but take them away from them or advise them that they are not allowed to drive until they are 18. If you can be sure that they will not drive, exclude them from your auto policies until they are 18. That way, in the eyes of the insurance companies, they are better risks and will have lower rates, even though they do not technically have anymore behind the wheel experience than the 18 year old who obtained a license at age 18.

I would call the DMV, but I would assume that you still need a LEARNER'S permit before your license in able to drive. No matter what your age, you need to pass the written test proving that you know the rules of the road...and need a certification of completing driver's ed (classroom and driving) in order to drive.

Yes, you need a permit first. Age doesn't matter. 17 or 70, it's permit first, then license.

If you are under 18 you must have a permit to drive, unless you've taken drivers ed and passed the written and driving tests. There is a home ed course through the DMV (about $20) where your parents let you drive and log your hours to earn your permit, and after you complete the required hours you can go take your test.

Both my sons were 18 before they got licensed and I think it's a good idea to make it a law that you cannot obtain it until your 18 simply because the roads are too congested as it is, and young drivers tend to have too many distractions. ie: cell phones, friends in the car, radio tuning, lead foot.

In Alabama you still have to take the written test for the permit (that is if u don't have any licenses period). If you are 18 and up you do not have to wait 6 months to get take the road test. Check with your DMV and make sure. I'm not sure how other states are. Hope this is helpful.
