If my parents were to get a mini 2004 for example, and they both have no claims and no license points, (so their insurance is about £350 each) how much would it cost to add me (a new driver aged 17) to their car.
If one of parents was to be insured, and I was added as a named driver I mean.
Roughly speaking.
And yes, it would be a new car that my parents hadn't driven before.
I am the UK by the way, so I am talking about £ not $.

Check out the car insurance websites or the moneysupermarket.com but as you are a new driver and under 25 you wont get much change out of £1000 as for your parents insurance they will get it for less than £350 if they have full 6 years no claims discount and if it is taken out on the main drivers named with the other one added they will only pay one insurance for them both which will be around £300. I previously found that the AA Ins is the cheapest, I pay £230 per year but I am the only driver. |

it would be very expensive since you are a new driver - my brother (aged 19 now) tried exactly the same thing but the people he went to go talk to said that the minimum price would be £1000 on a 2006-2007 ford focus - so he tried with my uncles 1995 VW Polo and the price just kept gion up and up. |

Another car in your household under your parents name has to build it's own history. In theory it starts at 0% no claims bonus.
Sometime the company that is already insuring the other cars will offer a small complimentary no claims bonus but not all do that. So it is a question of starting the car again from scratch insurance wise.
It is still going to be mega bucks as the insurance companies are going to see exactly where you are coming from with a new vehicle and one parent and a new 17 yr old driver with no history. The policy will still cost thousands and you might as well pay whatever the extra is and start to build your own no claims from the beginning. |

As a "new driver" - ? Are you 17, but have passed your test, or are you hoping for lessons in a brand-new car? I wouldn't let a learner abuse a brand-new car I owned! Also, if you think you can't afford your own insurance, and remain on your folks', you won't accrue any No-Claims Bonus of your own! This is what you need, to see your premium drop year by year.
Get yourself a small car, but insure it yourself. A 20-year old VW Polo, with around 60,000 miles on it, will be yours for about 600 pounds. It will be very economical, easy to service and very reliable. Get your own NCB building up, or you will never be able to afford insurance! |
