I bought insurance for the year in one state but just moved to a different state where I will have to register my car again and get a new license plate. If I already paid for the year, do I have to get new insurance? If I do have to get new insurance, can I get my money back because I didn't drive for the whole year while under my insurance company's policy?

For the USA, if your present insurance company is licensed to operate in your new state, you may be able to transfer coverage. There may a premium adjustment made, (either up or down) though due to the new location. If they don't operate in your new state, you will have to cancel the coverage and they will issue you a pro-rated refund |

Yes, you need new insurance to cover you in your new state. Ask your old insurance company for a rebate for the unused portion of the insurance. |

Insurance is regulated by each state, and most, if not all states require you to have insurance in the state you live in.
It's up to the insurance company from your old state. If they say no, then get them to state their reasons in writing, right from the policy document. |

For auto insurance the most efficient way to get a very good rate is do a policy comparison on auto policies. Make sure that you compare similar options with the same limits, auto type, zip code, etc so that all options are a good comparison.
What I most often recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have lots of insurers and can give many quotes on car insurance polices. |
