If I call to cancel my auto insurance will they lower their rate to try to keep me?

You are on a contract for a year. Just because your brother is paying less, doesn't mean you will. You have different driving records, different exposures, different cars. You probably have different coverages. If you cancel, you have to do it in writing, and accept the declaration that as of the signing they have no more obligation to pay any claims incurred after the cancellation. If you have a lien on your vehicle, you have to have new insurance in place as of the moment of cancellation. You will pay a cancellation penalty if you cancel early as well. Not to mention people who bounce around don't build up time for loyalty discounts.

I've never even heard of price matching. If you say you got a lower rate elsewhere, they just say goodbye.

Not likely. They will simply refund the unused portion of the premiums which you should use to purchase insurance through a cheaper source.

You may have to make a sacrifice. Go with your current company and pay a little more or switch to the new carrier. If you like, know and trust Mercury why don't you switch? It is not hard to change insurance companies and you already stated you can trust them. It is really no big hassle. I would take the discounted rate myself if I trusted the insurance company. You may be overpaying for insurance if you are finding a lot of lower prices. Maybe you should shop at http://www.esurance.com and see what the rate hey offer you. If it is lower, print it out and call them. I like to use http://www.nationwidebillrelief.com for my insurance shopping. There major carriers compete for your business. Either way I think you will be in great shape.

No, Esurance will not price match. They can't. Insurance companies have to file their rules and rates in each state that they do business.

Lowering your premium as some sort of "favor" to you would be considered discriminatory, and is therefore illegal.

How much do you spend with Esurance? They are a multi-million dollar insurance company. Do you think they would go out of business if they didn't receive your premiums?

How much do you think you will save with Mercury? If you find out that someone else is less expensive than Mercury, are you going to jump from them, too?

Like others have said, establishing a "history" with an insurance company is a good thing. It shows that you value their coverage and their ability to take care of you when you have a bad accident. Jumping from one company to another tells the insurance company that all you care about is price and they will treat you accordingly.

If you didn't have insurance went you went to esurance and now you do have 6 months of continous insurance the premiums are going to be cheaper with another company.

There is not such thing as price matching in personal insurance. I enter all the info and I get a quote. I can't do anything to play around with the price except making sure that all applicable discount are added.

Make sure you contact esurance and sign a cancellation request in order to cancel.

No, they will not. They will offer you to lower your coverage limits or increase deductibles or try to convince you to move your homeowners or renters policy over to their company, and then you would get what's called a multi-policy discount. I have never seen the company lower their price to keep a customer.

Most companies will pricematch.
Call and inform them that Mercury is cheaper and will they match? make sure your comparing apples to apples though!
