ok my 15 year old son has been driving for a while now with his learners permit. never had any problems with it.... im not gonna be able to take him somewhere today but one of MY freinds is 21 so legally he can ride with him without a prob.... if some thing just happends to happen... would my insurance cover iteven though im not in the car????????

NO, not on a learners permit. He is only riding your insurance and you must be there, or with someone from the DOT. Federal law. |

1) 15 year old is probably NOT covered.
Depending on your state of residence and your age you may get insurance with your learner's permit. Some insurance companies insure drivers with learner's permit, who are over 16 years. However, getting insurance with a learner's permit is not easy and quite expensive too. You can call up some your insurance agent and describe your situation to them. They will be able to tell you the quotes and also the terms and conditions. I agree with the posters about asking your insurance agent and reading the fine print.
2) Your son does NOT need to be driving without you being in the car.
Just because he has his permit does not mean HE HAS to drive.
3) One accident can raise your rates or cause you to lose insurance. Teens get into more accidents. So if sonny boy needs to go somewhere someone else can drive him. THAT is what I would do.
If it is non essential sonny boy does not need to be driving. The time to find out about your insurance is before an accident. An accident can DOUBLE your insurance...and it takes nine years to quit paying.
4) Until your son gets enough money to pay for the deductible...or buy his own insurance, he does not need to drive if you are not there.
My 16 year old brother totaled three cars when he was 16. NUTS.
5) State Farm has special programs for teen drivers...and special discounts.

(I'm probably a tad rude..my husband just totaled my car... second accident he has had in my car in two years. HE borrowed my car because he was too darn lazy to fix his garage door relay a $20 item)...and now my rates are up..again...and I am at risk of being dropped. Love my new Cadillac though). |

Yeah they have to. It doesent matter who is driving it is covered thats why you pay for insurance or at least most good companies. BUT read the fine print though! |
