Auto insurance should pay first, before your own health insurance.
If the accident is someone else's fault, and they have liability insurance (a requirement in most states), then accident-related medical costs should be picked up 100% by their insurance (up to anywhere from $15k to $25k depending on their policy). If they don't have insurance, then if you have an auto policy that covers yourself, it *might* have underinsured/uninsured medical coverage, or injury coverage that would cover you.
Failing any of that, then you'd be on your health insurance.
Of course, if you are sent to the emergency room from an accident, they can't verify who is going to pay what, and are likely to want to see your health insurance. You need to contact your insurance company and the insurer of the at-fault person (if it isn't you) to make sure that their insurance pays, and not yours. |

The person at fault for the accident if you're in an at fault state. Your auto insurance medical payments coverage if you're in a no fault state or if you are at fault in an at fault state. Your health insurance picks up when the auto insurance coverage is maxed out.
It's very common to put the treatment on your health policy and let the insurance companies sort it out. |

The first one to be billed is the auto insurance company of the person who was at fault for the accident, if they have insurance that is. |

If two parties are involved and the other is at fault, their insurance pays on your bills first. Now if they don't cover all of your expenses, you may then use your insurance to pay on the remainder of the bills. All liability policies have a clause about personal med pay. Check with your agent to see how much your policy will cover. |
