you only have to pay if you own the car (title & registration under your name).Since I'm pretty sure you're not the registered owner of your parents' car, then no, you don't have to pay insurance. But when you buy your own car, you'll need to insure it. to avoid any hassles, make sure your name is also on the insurance (as well as the title and registration), as if you ever get pulled over it might look a little suspicious... for younger people, it's usually cheaper (in fact, a LOT cheaper) if your name is added into your parents' (or any adult, assuming they have a good driving record) plan. Then after a while you can break away and have open your own plan with that insurance company. Should be cheaper, too, once you've established a good driving record and prove that you can pay your bills on time. |

Your parents need to list you on their policy as a named driver. If they do not do this, and you drive their vehicle and have an accident, the insurance company can refuse to honor the claim. They can also backdate the premium until the time you got your license if they find out that you are in the household and have your license.
Please do not drive anyone else's car until you are insured. Many people do not have coverage that will cover you in the event of an accident. |
