If involved in a car accident what are the insurance details that need to be exchanged?

Just read your insurance policy as it will explain what to do if you have an accident. Firstly they say never admit liability, you must exchange your name and address and insurance details with the other party and they must provide the same to you. A photo of the scene after the accident is always useful as are any witnesses you can find and obtain addresses.

What the law says you are required to do is a lot simpler than the answers so far suggest:

If you are involved in a collision which causes damage or injury to any other person, vehicle, animal or property, you MUST

1] Stop

2] Give your own and the vehicle ownerâ€™s name and address, and the registration number of the vehicle, to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring them

If you are unable to give your name and address at the time of the collision, report it to the police as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any case within 24 hours
[RTA 1988 sect 170]

If another person is injured and you do not produce your insurance certificate at the time of the crash to a police officer or to anyone having reasonable grounds to request it, you MUST

1] Report it to the police as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours
2] Produce your insurance certificate for the police within seven days
[RTA 1988 sect 170]

In short, you only have by law to give your insurance details if someone is injured - though in practice most of us would do that anyway.

things to also note down:
time of accident, weather conditions, positions of vehicles on the road, road traffic conditions, any injurries as a direct result from accident (if so immediately ring the police and await arrival), other driver (details such as glasses, anything on dash i.e. navigation device). Road markings and signs that have just been passed.

After reading the answers, I'll like to add get the driver's license number of the driver(s) involved and the license plates number(s) and state of the cars involved.

Everything else: name, address, insurance company, and policy number of drivers involved.

Also, if any witnesses, collect their name, address, and phone numbers.

4. Make and model of the car involved and the tag number.
5. If you have a camera take pictures of the damage to both vehicles and the intersection, etc.

Make sure you get the same info from the other person involved and don't take no for an answer. If they refuse to give it to you, call the police.
