If my name is on my car's insurance, but my friend drove, and I was in the passenger's seat. Is that illegal?

my parents seem to think that this is illegal, but I'm pretty sure it's ok. ESPECIALLY if I'm still in the car.

Under the personal auto policy form used by most states in the USA, if your friend is driving the car with the permission of someone listed on the policy, the insurance would apply.
However, the assets of the registered owner are at risk if they had a serious accident that exceeded the policy limit.
They don't sue the driver - they sue the car owner first. If the owners coverage is exhausted, then they'll sue the driver. And if your friend isn't on another policy, then their assets could be at risk.
And if your friend has an accident with your car, you might find your company will raise your rates.
So while it's probably legal, it's generally not a good idea. |

If he is not your legal spouse, and gets in an accident driving
your car, you may be the one getting sued, because it is your
possession. <|:-})-{* |

It might differ from insurances but i know with mine I'm only covered to drive my car, so if i let a friend drive with me in it and we crash my insurance wouldn't insure me. Your best bet is to call your insurance to fined out. |

In UK this would be illegal unless your friend has insurance which covers her to drive any vehicle |

No it is not illegal
Especially if youre in the car the only time its a problem is iff that person is excluded from the auto insurance........that means your parents signed their name on a document saying that thjis person isnt covered if they drive your car! |

It's legal to allow someone else to drive your car as long as they have your permission. It's your property and you can lend it to someone. Now, whether your insurance will cover the damage to your car if your friend gets into an accident while driving your car is another story. Since she/he is not listed as a driver on your insurance, it probably wouldn't be covered under your insurance. It may be covered under her/his insurance, but that depends on the type of coverage they have. |

No. Its not, unless your insurance specifcally states that it will cover others driving your car. |

It depends. If it's your parents insurance policy that you are on and they have a rider in their policy not allowing anyone (other than you) to drive under the age of 25, it would be wrong to let your friend drive if under 25.
Usually though, if the friend is driving with permission, they are covered, especially if it's your car and your policy.

Insurance follows the car so if you are the named insured and you allow the friend to drive they are covered under your policy. have parents check with their insurance agent. |

Depends on the state.
1. Is your Friend INSURED???
2. Does your Car Insurance Company allow another person NOTon the policy to drive this car?
3. Is the Policy is YOUR NAME ONLY?
**or are you still on your parent's policy??
I think: IF you are over 18 or 21 you are an adult and if you have your own insurance, if the person gets a ticket, they pay, not you. If they get in a car accident, the person driving needs their insurance to cover that accident. (this may vary from state to state).
I also believe that if you are on your Parent's Insurance Policy that they can make and imply any rules and limitations that they so wish. They are LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE AND LIABLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THAT CAR!!!
I think in all good favor they are looking out for you and their best interest!
It's best not to loan friends money or to let them drive a car that they don't own, lease or rent.
I wish you well!
I hope this helps.
My parents were real strict with this issue.
And I still at 40 something don't let friend's, even responsible ones drive my cars.
Just makes good common sense.

It all depends on the terms of your policy. |

Oh, you left out a big detail. Your name is on the insurance as a driver, but you are not the owner - your parents are - correct? So, the insurance policy covers anyone who drives the car with the permission of the car's owner - which would be your parents, not you. So, your friend was driving the car without the owners permission which technically is not legal. |

No, it's fine, as long as the friend has a license. |
