If my road tax ran out on the 28 th of February,how long do i have before I get a fine?

Phone the DVLA and explain. They are very helpful. You should SORN the car untilyou get the new MOT and then tax it again before you use it.

BTW if your MOT has run out then your insurance may also be invalid...... sorry to pass on that bad news as well.....

BUT please phone the DVLA the people there don't want extra work so make their life easy and they will do the same for you.

These days there is no period of grace.

The DVLA send reminders about 3 weeks before the tax is due so they take the view that you have plenty of time to buy your new disc.

The old "tax applied for" sticker in the window won't work any more.

You can tax your car on-line so that will minimise the risk of a penalty. The police and DVLA have no discretion now. If they catch you then they have to nick you if you drive your car. If you did get prosecuted then your opportunity to plea mitigation will be to the magistrate. They sometimes listen and may waive the penalty.

You are not allowed to drive it on the road without road tax or MoT.

You can only drive it without an MoT if you are driving it to or from the MoT test itself.

If you apply for a disc (which will be back-dated) by 14th March you will not get fined automatically under the "continuous licensing" regulations.
However, if you use the car (or leave it parked on a public road) without a valid disc displayed, even on 1st March, you can be fined. The only exception is travelling to and from a pre-booked appointment for an MOT test.

There are 2 offences. Not taxing the car - you have generally 14 days to do this, but the new tax must be backdated to the old expiry. You can't do a SORN as it must be done sooner. Failure to display a valid tax disc - up to the discretion of the police officer, traffic warden, or busybody who nicks you. NB if you don't get the tax done within 14 days I think you can't do it at the post office and have to go through local DVLA office

In theory you can get fined on the 1st of March but if you can prove the hospital thing you may be OK

The DVLC say they know what cars are taxed, but I wonder if that's true ,considering there are about 2 million untaxed cars. I wouldn't worry, just tax it when you get the Mot,and tax it from the beginning of March. You have 14 days to do this.
Don't tell the DVLC anything, make them work, thats what they get paid for. Believe me they would not be sympathetic.

Legally you have no time at all. Your vehicle must be taxed whenever it's on the road but most police forces will usually show lenience and allow you up to 2 weeks to tax it. If you have already been done, I don't think there is any time restriction on the police to issue a summons

you have two weeks if you take all your documentation tomorrow after the MOT then you should be fine but only drive the car to the MOT otherwise you are breaking the law

Normally there is two weeks grace before the fine is posted. But don't push it!

Due the 28th? then you have til April1st to make the file good. Call them they will give you the details you need.

You should have 14 days before they start asking questions, if you get a (sorn) statutory off road notice you get 12 months.but I would contact the dvla immediately to tell them.
