If someone gives you a car and they don't have the title, is there a way to get it?

I fail to understand the apparent lack of concern in this matter, the title needs to appear before it can be registered, driven, sold, or disposed of.

You'll want to call the local DMV and see what they say, normally you can apply for a duplicate title but the registered owner has to do it (meaning the person whose name was on the title last).

So, like whoever gave it to your friend, or even before that.
As for me, I won't go near a car without a title, no way.

The first thing you need to do is have the DMV or police to run the vin and find out who the owner is. Then you need to contact that person. If you request a duplicate title it will go to the person whos name is on it and not you. Each state is a little different in their "abandond" vehicle laws and sale procedure. The local DMV office can best assist you with this. In NY if the car is left at a shop and never picked up after 30 day a lein can be placed on it. You then have to send the "owner" a certified letter giving them a chance to claim the car. Usually another 30 days. If the car is not "claimed" the car can then be sold at auction. and a new title issued. Sometimes "free" costs more then it's supposed to.

Is it stolen? If not contact the DMV. Also contact the police they will send an officer to check the VIN number and see if it's on a hot list. Do not drive this car untill the police have checked the VIN.

A vehicle without a title is like a piece of property without a deed. Without a title, worthless, and you don't know if it's stolen or not.

You can go to a title service, but be aware that can get expensive.

You would need to contact the last registered/legal owner and ask for a notorized bill of sale from them, or the released title,otherwise, the car cannot be transferred to anyone. You can gain the info from the Public Disclosure unit for vehicle licensing, they will give you the forms to send by certified mail, and what to do if you don't recieve a response, some states will not title a car without a clear title, you'll need to ask about the laws for your state.

have a bill of sale in hand...go to DMV....ask for document for lost title...spend more money
