If someone goes to prison for 10 years and they leave their motorcycle at my house can I legally sell it?

Contact your local authorities. There may be something which will allow you to gain ownership of the bike because of abandonment. After you are declared the owner, you can sell the bike but not before

If it's the kind of motorcycle that is street legal, you'd be smarter to obtain an "abandoned vehicle" title for it and then sell it.

You first have to get a lean on the bike just to make it legal then you have to go through the title transfer process which could take several months then the bike is yours but in the mean time enjoy riding it but make sure that it is insured, As long as no one comes to claim it as the owner and it is on YOUR property it can become yours but you have to go through the court process and your local dmv should have the proper paper work but sometimes you have to poke them with a stick lol. Do you have access to a lawyer?

I watch a lot of Judge Mathis. If they moved and abandoned their property after about 90 days then you could throw it away, sell it or whatever. But since he/she is in prison, that makes it tricky. It depends on a few factors. Are you close to this person? Did the friend get sentenced for a violent crime? It it was attempted murder or aggravated assult then I would suggest that you dont touch it. Can you locate a relative for them to come get it? If the sell is deemed illegal then you might wind up in the same prison as your buddy. Best to get the opinion of a few cops in your area.

Call the police and have the motorcyle declared as abandoned property. Don't sell it. Have the cops tow it away.

In most jurisdictions, abandoned or derelict vehicles can be ordered removed by the property owner. Towing companies do this all the time. They can then decide if they want to sell it for scrap, or file for a new certificate of title.

You could sell the bike if you wanted to, but since it isn't likely that you can get a good title, you aren't going to get much more than scrap price for it.

Then you should be prepared for the consequences when the owner gets out of prison and wonders what happened to the bike. Maybe, you will have left town by then.
