You're responsible for the person you hit, regardless of whether you were rear-ended. You are supposed to leave enough following distance that you can avoid a rear-end collision.

The person who hit you is responsible for all damage, make sure you have a police report.

If you are rear-ended and pushed into the car in front of you then the car that rear-ended you is responsible for damages to both cars. Just because your car physically hit the car in front of you does not mean you are responsible for their damages.

Insurance companies and the courts look for causation and the cause of the front cars damages were the actions of the car behind you. Just because your car was used as a battering ram does not make you at fault.

Some people will try telling you that you would be at-fault for being too close to the car in front of you. Don't listen to that stuff. That only applies if you rear-end the car in front of you first.

if someone rear ends you which causes you to hit someone in front of you, the person who rear ended you would be responsible for your auto and the auto in front of you;

but;;;; the key is the guy in front of you; if he states he felt 1 impact that would prove the guy behind you is responsbile;

but;;;;;;if the guy in front of you says he felt 2 impacts, then part of the responsibility would fall on you; the implication is that you rear ended the guy in front and then the guy behind you rear ended you, which caused the guy in front to be hit twice;

if the guy in front says i felt 2, then you would be responsible for a percentage of his rear and your front end damages; the guy behind would be obligated for a percentage of your front and the rear of the guy in front of you;

hopefully the guy in front of you confirms only 1 impact;

As a general rule. If you hit the car in front. Then someone hits you from behind. You are responsible.

If you stop. Then someone hits you from behind. Then pushes your car into one in front of you. The car that hit you is responsible.

There is a lot of variables though. Here are three sites that give some different situations. You could probably find a lot more.
