how do you think they can do this with regards to what all 3 of the people might possibly need to bring to the DMV as far as paper work and documents goes? Again, this is a bit confusion so what this is , is this: 2 people already own or have their name on the title of a car, and they want to add their sister to it also, so she can drive it, they already added her to the auto insurance, does she need to do anything else, or carry anything else with her in the car to legally be allowed to drive it? This is in the state of California?

You need the title (I assume the car is paid for. If not, your lender has the title) and cash or check.This is a family transfer.
It costs $15 to add a spouse, parent, grandparent, domestic partner or minor sibling. If your sister is not a minor, then you will have to pay the USE TAX which is based on the value of the car (you supply that value, so don't over state the value) You don't have to get it smog (unless the biennial smog is due anyway) You use Statement of Facts form Reg 256 for the smog exemption. If the car is less than 10 years old you need the odometer reading. Also on Reg 256 there's a place to note that you're adding a name.
The two owners currently on the front of the title need to sign the front of the title and then sign again on the back of the title along with the third persons signature.
You will leave the DMV office (or AAA Auto CLub) with a new registration that has all three names on it. I always make a copy for my file, but keep a copy in the car. The new title with all three names will come in the mail in 2-3 weeks. Keep title in house, not in car.

BTW, she can legally drive anyones car without being on the title. As long as the car is not reported stolen.
As long as you have everyones signatures, only one person needs to go to the DMV/AAA to do the work. You don't need all three of you there. |
