You have to prove to the DMV that you sold it. This involves showing copies of the agreement you had with the person you sold it to as well as that person's name and contact info. |

Most states have a form that you fill out and send in to show you have sold the vehicle, and to whom. Once you have done that, even if the person who bought it neglects to change it over it takes responsibility off you. If you didn't fill out the form and submit it, you are still the owner of the vehicle and responsible for everything. This means you get the red light camera tickets to pay. And the parking tickets.

Sounds to me like the person you sold it to never transferred the title into his/her name. Some folks do this with the intent to sell the vehicle and not show they owned it. I'd go to the DMV and tell them you no longer own the vehicle and you'd like your name removed from the title. Any documentation you can provide as evidence of your claim would definitely be in order. |

You have good answers so I won't add to it except to say in Arizona you can do a liability transfer online and its easy. Check it out for your State. |

Sign a Release of Liability form and date it the day you sold the car, and have the DMV or AAA Auto Club date stamp it the day you turned it in. So there will be two different dates. Make sure the VIN# that you write is clear. 5 can look like S, L can look like 1, 6 can look like G, etc.
This form states that whatever shinanigans the car gets into, you're not responsible.
It's the sellers responsibility to sign Release of Liability.
It's the buyers responsibility to complete the title transfer.
Many times, dealers won't take your name off until the car is sold and they have another name to put on it. Dealers don't put cars in their own names. |
