If you are trading in a car, you have up to 30 days to contact your insurance agent (but don't wait that long!!) and inform them of the change. The coverage will be the same as it was on the traded car until you call to officially make the change.
If you are not trading a car, but are adding a new vehicle to a current insurance policy, you do need to contact the agent. Every insurance company has an 800 number for this purpose. Your agent may be closed, but you can speak to the actual insurance company on the weekend. Look on the back of your card for the 800 number. If you don't see it there, check the internet. You will need to call, add the vehicle, and then call your agent on Monday to confirm the change. Your dealership should actually do this while you are there with them, as it is their responsibility to make sure you have insurance before issuing you a plate.

I have done it numerous times and since I have full coverage on my vehicles the new car was also covered. The dealer called my insurance co. when it was opened and gave them the information on my new car. |

Yes you and the car are covered if you have a current policy. The new car will be provide the same coverages.
You then have 30 days to notify your agent or company of the new vehicle info. |
