If they have a gun or are bigger than me and *I* don't have one, then I'm calling the cops; if I have the upper hand, then I might be inclined to, er, encourage them to leave hastily ;-)

Be extra careful. The thief may be armed and dangerous and may use his firearm when cornered by you. Do you really want to expose yourself to danger? You have a perfect right to protect your properties but are you willing to risk your life over a car?

Call the police immediately in any case. Make sure you describe the perpetrator accurately and in details when you call: his race/ethnicity, his body type and hairstyle (or headgear), clothing...If you can see his own car, describe it too, including the license plate. If possible,snap a photo or two of the thief with your camera or cell phone for the police to identify him should he run away before they come. The photos can also be evidence in court later on

Call the police. Detain them if you are able to do so, until they arrive.

My advice is to call the police if you attack them or him depending on the situation, that person or persons can file a assault charges against you. Strange it may seem that justice works both ways.

Like the dude above me says detain them if you can or other wise try to get license plate if there's a car waiting and give the information to the police.

I would probably be in more trouble than the criminal but that's how this country works (Thanks to the ACLU and like criminals have way too many rights)

It's hard to win these days. If you call the cops, the theif will flee. If you call the cops and they chase the guy to catch him and he ends up roughed up a little, the cops get in trouble. If you are able and kick the guys ***, being a greasy punk criminal, he'll get an even greasier lawyer to turn the tables and get YOU in trouble for kicking his ***. things aren't right...
