no they can not! The only way for them to do that is for you to actualy sign the title over to them and then they have to go to the state revenue office and apply for a new title with their name on the front. But they cannot do that without you actually signing the back of the title. if they forge the signature then they could go to jail. |

If you are 18 - No.
If you are under 18, probably yes. Police would have nothing to do with it, Motor vehicle title is a state issue, with jurisdiction in the DMV. |

If you are under the age of 18 unless you are married and living on your own, or declared an emancipated minor, you really can't have a car nor an insurance policy in your name. Your parents are responsible for you until you reach the age of majority, and can indeed sign for you when it comes to protecting your interests or theirs.
So yes, they can. Without calling the chief of police or anyone else for that matter. If you have a title in your name, someone obviously put a vehicle in your name in a non legal manner since you are under the age of consent, and they can correct that by holding that property until you are an adult. |

No. And I'm assuming you have a drivers license and you are not a minor.
Because if you are a minor, then there are restrictions: check out California website :

Because if you are a minor and don't have a drivers license the law reads:
"According to the law, any minor who does not possess a valid driver's license cannot order, purchase, lease, accept, or otherwise obtain any vehicle subject to registration (Vehicle Code §15500)." |

if it is in YOUR name only they can do nothing. if it is in yours and parents name they can do w/e they want.in your name they can only take keys. i have been thru this more than once. |
