If you have a small accident in your car with another car and there is no damage to either car do you still?

have to report it to the insurance company?

I would do so as a precaution, as well as noting the other drivers details.

Just because the other person says they won't take any action, doesn't mean you should believe a word they say.

Later on, they could claim they got whiplash or something. You can't be too careful.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Normally there will be something like 2 years (depending on the state) for the other person to sue you. and believe me just because they claim no damage or injury does NOT mean they won't sue you. Anyway if they do and they you have to report it to your company, your company may say you did not keep the contract because most companies have rules about timely reporting.
Report it, if they don't pay anything out your rates WILL NOT go up.

Believe me, these other people are wrong in telling you no! You have the exposure in that someone may make a claim against you. You need to report that to your company. They are there to protect you! But, again, unless you are found to be at fault and unless THEY PAY OUT your rates will NOT go up even if you just had a claim yesterday! You also should call and make a police report, you can do that simply by going to the station and giving them the information that is for insurance purposes. But I'm telling you, you need to protect yourself. The other person may still come after you especially when they talk to someone who says "hey I got hit and I got $$$$ for it!"

My daughters both work in car insurance and they say 'Blue Sea' above has it exactly right. So let your company know.

Yes. Yes. Yes. It happened to me. No damage, exchanged details it was a case of six of one half a dozen of the other, thought nothing more of it until 6 months later when I had bailiffs knocking at the door. The other party had got in touch with one of these no win no fee solicitor types and claimed £25,000 compensation for "injuries suffered". They then proceeded to treat it as if I had no insurance because they didn't bother contacting me and checking.

my advice is to report it , especially if there is doubt to who's fault the accident was. The other party could hit you with a claim and it has been known for the other party to extend the damage claim ....to other damage . sO CAUTION IS THE BEST EXERCISE.
OK

Any incident which could influence an underwriters decision should be disclosed. This includes motoring accidents, incidents which COULD give rise to a claim and, of course, any convictions etc.

However, the reality is, provided neither party sustained any damage and both agree there and then to drive away (without exchanging any details etc) and say no more about it, you won't end up going to hell for it!

no if you are not going to claim you dont have to tell anyone.

You should report it to the insurance company - as it is a policy requirement. If the insurance company do not pay out to anyone they will eventually allow your no claims bonus - or you can submit it 'for record purposes only'.

No doubt some will say that it doesn't matter - however the fact that you have had an accident does reflect on your driving ability and the insurers must be made aware of the fact.

I have a standard reply to these.

"if the insurance company don't alter your insurance premium then you obviously have no problems. If they DID alter your insurance premium then they regarded it as a material fact and you have saved yourself from having broken the law and risking the insurers voiding your policy when you need it."

no if there is no damage and if you and the other indidvidual are ok with things you do not need to notify the ins company.

Depends on your claims record.Lots of claims boost the cost of insurance. Make sur the other party is not going to claim damages, and report it to the police to protect yourself.

Nope. As long as both of you are satisfied that there is no damage and neither of you intend to file a claim with your insurance company for repairs (and why would you if nothing is wrong), you don't have to report it. Most states have a threshold limit like $100.00, meaning if it would cost $100.00 or less to fix it, you don't have to report it.
