My insurance is State Farm. In 14 years of driving I've never before had to file a claim and I'm wondering how it works. What if you wait too long?

As far as I know, I didn't actually kill the deer.
This happened several weeks ago and the damage was surprisingly minimal (therefor I did not report it), however since then the car has been making some strange noises, particularly when braking, I'm going to have it looked at tomorrow. I don't expect insurance to cover it anyway, my deductible is $500, and I don't think there is anywhere near that much damage (then again, I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination.) My mother says I should call and file a claim first, which I suppose makes sense, but have I waited too long? I did just read that collision doesn't cover deer accidents, but comprehensive (i think it was) does. I'm trying to find my insurance info (I just had it the other day, then I did a major cleaning and organizing, so of course now I can't find it.) It would probably answer my question and I can also see what exactly the coverage I have is.

You should report it right away. You may need a police report to back up your claim. Deer accidents are as common as breathing where I live. People will sometimes try to blame other damages (drunk driving...) on a deer accident. Your insurance may want additional information so contact the police and let them know when and where it happened etc |

Call your agent then file as soon as you have the police report. Waiting too long just puts off getting it fixed. |

The sooner the better, but I just read today that unless you have comprehensive insurance coverage, deer hits are not covered, especially in the big deer states like Michigan and Pennsylvania. Good luck. |
