If you sell a car and find out that the new owners have not registered it?

What can you do? I sold my old car to a realitive over six months ago. I assumed (silly me) that most people register them right away and since plates are on it again assumed it's been registered. I found out today when this realitive asked me to take out a title loan on it for them, that they never registered the car and it's still in my name with false plates on it. What can I do? I sure as heck do not need to be liable for anything they do!

Call the cops. Relatives or not. You don't want to go to jail.

As long as you filled out and sent in the form that you sold the vehicle, with the name and address of the new owner on it, you are no longer responsible for the vehicle, If you didn't fill out that form and send it in, do so NOW. If they are stopped with false plates, guess who gets in trouble? If it's still in your name and you haven't notified the state you no longer own it, you are liable for anything they do.

Oklatom is correct and the form he's talking about you can download off your states DMV website. It's a Notice of Release of Liability. In Ca it can be found at:http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg138.pdf

if it titled in your mane via the loan then you are liable for anything they do with that car. If they are suspended then you can lose your license if they get stopped or in an accident.

keep your copy of the bill of sale in case something comes up. I surely wouldn't get a loan in your name for it. If they are too irresponsible to register it are you going to trust them to pay a loan you are liable for.
