If you teen gets a driving permit are they automaticly covered under your (parent) auto insurance?

In my state, Alaska, and with my insurance carrier, Allstate, my kids are included at no extra cost while they have their learners permit and their restricted license that requires I be in the car whenever they are driving it... But only if I tell them about it, and have them listed. This differs not only state to state, but insurance carrier to insurance carrier. And it does not care if you are a parent, they care if they live in the household.

After they have a full license to drive without me in the car, they are named on the policy, and it starts to cost money, whether I actually *ever* let them drive the car at all.

There is a class open only to 16+ kids that reduces their insurance cost, but not enough to make it worth the cost of the class for me. It may make them better drivers, but I have been in the car for 2 years with each of mine, and they are already good drivers.

The discounts for good student are significant enough that mine get to keep their licenses only as long as they rate the discount.

As just about everyone has said, your parents need to notify the insurance company to have you placed on the policy. now if they are with a good insurance company they will have a uninsured motorist clause in the policy that will cover the car for people who normally would not be driving the car, For example, your parents take the car to a repair shop and while the mechanic is test driving the car (This is done from time to time) and he where to be involved in an accident, the insurance company will pay for some of the damages.

No your insurance company has to be notified by the policy holder.

Vehicles are covered, not people. So anyone driving with your permission is covered under insurance. However, for a child with a new license living at the same address, it's advisable (sometime mandatory, read your policy) to add him or her to the policy as a secondary driver.

Not a chance! That generous they are not.

No, just think of the teen as just another person you know. If you want to let someone drive your car, they need to be on your insurance policy. Just because they are family, you still have to notify the insurance company of any persons driving the vehicle. With a teen, your insurance will go up significantly.

Nope, you are not an authorized driver unless your parents add you to the policy.

No, your parents have to add you as a part time driver to their policy/s. Their premiums will skyrocket when adding you to the policy. To help things, if you do well in school, you get credit on your policy.

Automobile insurance cover the CAR not the owners. That is why your parents have one insurance policy per car.

They may penalize your parent for your driving LATER / AFTER you get into accidents, but by "NO FAULT" law they have to pay whatever damage you cause.

OK since so many people below are saying NO - let me clarify. Insurance companies used to have many clauses. They would find ways not to pay after an accident. It got so bad that states all passed "no fault" law making the insurance companies have to pay (cover) once the policy was written. NO FAULT means exactly that - that the company can not find fault and not pay. In fact even if the driver was break the law (drunk driving, suspended license) it is all covered.

This information was actually given to me by my insurance AGENT when I was young (and not listed under my parents policy). I've had few accidents and no they were always covered.

It is in the interest of the insurance company to propagate the myth that if you are not listed you are not covered.

Again, car insurance covers THE CAR - not the owners. The people listed under the policy are used to just calculate the cost of the insurance, not limit the coverage
