If your car is pretty old and not worth that much, what parts of auto insurance do people normally remove?
Find answers to your legal question.

If your car is pretty old and not worth that much, what parts of auto insurance do people normally remove?

I have a 14yr old toyota previa with 185,000 miles, and my auto ins is coming up for renewal. It currently has the following coverages. Which do people typically remove for such older vehicles?

*liability
*uninsured motorists
*automonile medical payments
*auto collision
*auto comprehensive

I would suggest thinking about removing collision possibly even comprehensive.

You need to look at it from YOUR financial stand point.

For collision.....

#1 Do you have enough money that if you would hit a mailbox or another car with your car, and it was your fault, could you afford to pay a deductible and a little more premium on your bill, or have to go out on your own a buy a new car?

For comprehensive.....
#1 If you hit a deer, or if there was a hail storm, or your windshield broke from a truck in front of you, would it be easier to pay a deductible to get it fixed and pay a little extra premium each month OR would it be easier to just pay everything out of pocket to do the repairs needed.

Also you want to figure out what your vehicle's value is... or approximately is, my suggestion is to go to www.nada.com.

But MOST people that have older cars will remove collision and/or comp. You can have comp w/ no collision and the reason why some people keep comprehensive on the policy without collision is because there are a lot of things that are out of your control that can happen to your vehicle that IF you didn't have comprehensive coverage, you would be responsible to pay to fix the vehicle. For example: THEFT, Vandalism, an act of god/nature (like a deer, animal or bird, a tornado, flood, hail storm), most glass breakage....

You must have liability and medical.

I would recommend keeping the uninsured motorist because that protects YOU in the event that you are in an accident with someone else who is at fault and they have no insurance and cause you bodily injury, then at least you can get bodily injury limits from your policy if that other person has no insurance.... otherwise your bodily injury damage is your problem, not the insurance's problem.

Hope this helps.

Comprehensive, Collision and UM/UIM PD (the property damage portion) and usually along with taking those coverages off you have to remove rental coverage as well. Well at least in Texas.....Its really up to you what you want to remove. Ive seen 1979 vehicles with Full Coverage. Some people just seem to think that if they have to pay a $500 deductible & their car is only worth $1,500 then its not worth it to have those others coverages on there because those other coverage might be costing them $50 a month.

Comprehensive and collision, you legally have to have liability and medical payments and I would not recommend dropping uninsured and underinsured coverage .. there's lots of people out there with no insurance!

Keep Liability and Personal Injury Protection. Dump the rest.

the least you need is liability and medical payments I'd keep too. The rest you can lose.

Collision and comprehensive cover the damage to your own auto. If the vehicle is old and has high miles, those are the coverages people generally do without. In the long run, it will usually cost more to insure the vehicle with those coverages, than what the vehicle is actually worth.

Liability coverage is what pays for damages/injuries you cause if you are found at fault for an accident.
Medical Payments pays your medical bills up to the stated limit if you are hurt in an accident
Uninsured motorist covers your medical claim if you are hurt and the other driver does not have insurance.

These 3 are important to have
