Yep, in California it does. Automatically after 45 days.

It depends on what state you live in. You need to find out if insurance is mandatory in your state (only a few where it isn't). Find out what happens if you do not renew your insurance and also what happens if you get caught driving without insurance.

Yes. You will receive a warning noice "Intent to Suspend" about 30 days after your insurance ends. If you do not respond or change the status to non-operational, your registration will be revoked until you provide proof of insurance and pay any additional fines or fees.

The state notifies the dept of motor vehicles when a policy is not renewed.
If you switch co's, the agent will take care of notifying the state you switched.

In NYS it will be! Insurance companies are required by law to notify DMV as soon as your insurance is no longer in effect for any reason!

Not usually, but in some states you won't be able to renew it when it runs out without proof of insurance. What can happen is your drivers license can be suspended for failure to carry insurance.

Driving without insurance is a special brand of "stupid" reserved for people far dumber than you. If you're in an accident and you don't have your insurance company to run interference for you, well, you're "chum" for the sharks.

The other people's lawyer is going to sue you for millions of dollars in pain and suffering. You'll get a cheapie lawyer, and they will throw nitpicking and technicalities at him to waste his time and your money. Then you'll lose in court.

"Aha, I just won't pay!" you say. Wrong, then they take away your license to drive. (uninsured people who don't pay damage claims lose their license! Driving anyway = jail.) So you're taking the bus to work while they garnish your wages so you get half a paycheck. You can't shed the debt in bankruptcy (well you could, but you still won't get your license back until you pay it off.)

But hey, you saved $600 on insurance. Great plan.

Generally, the state doesn't know that you've let your insurance drop. The company may assume that you went to another company. (Hey, you really liked the gecko and changed!) The state doesn't have the resources to check that everyone is keeping their insurance paid up. Some states do check by doing random checks. Others just wait until you're pulled over for something and you can't prove insurance.... then they pull your license or some places they confiscate your car. If they pull your license or ticket you for driving without insurance, you'll go into a high risk group when you do try to get insurance and end up paying a fortune. Don't let it drop even if you have to beg or borrow the money to pay your premium. It's just not worth it.
