You go to the DMV, take a paper test, usually 40-60 questions, if you pass that you then get a permit, you have to drive on it for atleast 30 days, but you can wait longer if you choose, after the 30 days though, you just go to a driving school in the area pay about 25 bucks, they take you on a drive and if you pass, bam you get your license.

you do not need a driver's permit, as long as you are with an adult who is just giving you driving experience. I never did. I think if you are 18, then you are responsible for your actions, therefore no permit needed. You just need to borrow someone's car, and have them take you to the DMV, and then you can do the driving test, and I know there is a written exam, and then they send you your license.

How to apply for a driver license if you are over 18
If you are a visitor in California over 18 and have a valid driver license from your home state or country, you may drive in this state without getting a California driver license as long as your home state license remains valid.

If you take a job here or become a resident, you must get a California driver license within 10 days. Residency is established by voting in a California election, paying resident tuition, filing for a homeownerâ€™s property tax exemption, or any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to nonresidents.

To apply for an original driver license if you are over 18, you will need to do the following:

Visit a DMV office (make an appointment for faster service)
Complete application form DL 44 (An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.)
Give a thumb print
Have your picture taken
Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.
Verify your birth date and legal presence
Provide your true full name
Pay the application fee
Pass a vision exam
Pass a traffic laws and sign test. There are 36 questions on the test. You have three chances to pass.(Sample Test)

After you pass your driving test you will be issued an interim license valid for 60 days until you receive your new photo license in the mail. If you have not received your license after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 and they can check on the status for you. Have your interim license with you to provide information when requested.

You need to get a permit before you can get a license in California. Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. In order to get a license you must take a driving test, which means you need to practice driving, which requires a permit. The only way you can get a license without first getting a permit is if you have learned to drive somewhere else, then you might be able to pass the driving test without ever having driven in California.

Once you get your permit, there is no waiting period for adults. You can take the driving test as soon as you feel ready. I'd suggest practicing for at least a month or so. The longer you practice the more likely you are to pass on the first try.

In my state once you are 18 you have to get a permit, but after I think 2 weeks you can get your gdl. Good luck with your test, it took me like 3 times to pass it. Read that little book that you can get at the dmv a few times, and once you mark an answer unless you are 100% sure it is wrong don't change it, usually your first guess is correct.. that is if you read the book. READ THE BOOK! Good luck guy.
