Im am the legal owner of a car, how do I get the reg docs transferred to me?

Unfortunately, being a trusting g/f (now ex) I allowed my ex to have my car reg'd in his name, I wont go into why as its not relevant here. Now we have split, he keeps saying he will transfer it, but keeps making excuses, complains about why the world is oh so bad to him and generally trying to get me to drop the issue through pity, or guilt. (btw he dumped me)
Anyway, I can prove I bought the car, how do I get him to transfer it over to me, so i am the registered keeper, by force? through the legal system?

Apply to the DVLA to become the registered keeper. you will need the details of the car. They will send the current owner a notice to say that someone else has applied to become the registered keeper and as long as he doesnt object to this the car will be transferred to you. You can get a form from the post office i think or ring the DVLA and ask them about it

Remind him that if he keeps the documents in his name he's liable for any penalties/parking fines etc that you incur, that might make him think about transfering them...

You might have bought the car, however, it could be said as a gift! You need his cooperation to change ownership to your name.

your x might have a different train of thought when the road tax renewal notice drops on the doormat especially if you refuse to pay and still keep the car on the road,being registered owner might be expensive for him.possible reason to negotiate unfortunately no guarantee of success

If you have proof of payment and can prove it is yours ,the log book in the u.k. is not proof of ownership ,it is written on it ..It would help in your name for insurance though[just to keep it simple for them ]

This is for here in the States, but do you have separate Title and Registration? If your name is on the title and you have it in hand (at least here in the US) you can go to the DMV and get the registration changed for ~$20 dollars. Title trumps registration. If they are the same in the UK, sorry!

Technically you are not the legal owner if the car is registered in his name now are you. I would contact an attorney if I was you but if the EX wants to make a deal out of this, he can keep it from happening since he is the legal owner of the car.
