I am 19 years old and have my drivers permit and I can't drive alone. However, I can drive with a licensed person. However I am not sure of the age one must be to be able to act as a licensed driver with someone 19 years old.
So if my girlfriend is 19 and has her license, could she act as the licensed driver and allow me to drive as long as she is in the car with me?

Wow. Its amazing how many people don't understand the law. The answer to your question is explained on page 10 of your 2008 California Driver Handbook. You can look it up for yourself.
Once you turn 18 you are now legally an adult. While practicing driving on an Instruction Permit you must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 18 years old. The 25 year old requirement is only for minors 16 & 17. They must be seated near enough to you to take control of the vehicle, and since this would be your girlfriend I'm sure she's already sitting there. So to answer your question: YES . That is permitted.
PS: While driving keep your hands on the wheel, not your girlfriend. |

Yes, once your are an adult (18 yrs.) ALL the graduated licensing restrictions are eliminated.
This also applies IF you receive your license at 17 1/2 yrs. You only need to be 18 yrs. (not 18 1/2) for the one year restriction of NO PASSENGERS UNDER 25 to be waived.
This is one VERY GOOD reason why parents should push their teens to get more practice BEFORE their 18th birthday. |

In California, the licensed driver has to be 25 or over for it to count when you have your permit. However, you should be able to skip getting a permit and get your license immediately if you are over 18. |
