In California, what level of insurance does the DMV require if I don't use my car?

I don't want to register as a nonoperated vehicle however because I come home once in a while and use the car. During these periods, I will insure the car. Since I won't be DRIVING without insurance, is it ok not to have insurance even if the car is registered normally?

You must insure your car to drive on the public hiways of CALIF.
You can register your car as non-operational with the CA DMV and leave the insurance in effect. You cannot park your vehicle on a public CA street with non-operational registration. You can also suspend your insurance or part of the insurance while the car is not operational and parked in a garage or on private property.
You might want to keep Fire and Theft insurance running if the car is kept outside but not registered or operational. Beginning in January of 2007, the CA registration rules are changing significantly with regard to PROOF of LIABILITY INSURANCE. Check with the DMV to help decide which plan is most appropriate for your specific needs. |

There is a big difference between "I don't use my car" vs "I very rarely use my car". You say one thing but you actually mean the other.
You can get cheaper insurance if you don't go over certain mileage per year, great for kit cars and exoticars that don't get driven much at all. Look into that. |

You don't need insurance if you register your car as "non-operative". But then you can't ever drive it. |

To keep your car legal and registered you will have to have insurance on it. If it is parked on public streets it needs insurance. If you have it in a locked garage and the garage burns down and you don't have insurance, it will be a total loss to you. If you only drive it infrequently you can probably get very cheap year round insurance. Talk to your agent. But no, it's not a good idea to drop it completely unless you are going to non-op status, in which case you couldn't drive it. |
