Just the driving test, but I'd suggest you read here depending on your age, to know what is coming.

IfYou Are Under 18

If you are under the age of 18 and want to apply for a license, you must get training and hold afor teenage drivers to become licensed is covered in detail in our driver education article.

But in a nutshell, California (like most states) employs a graduated driver licensing program, where teens are issued a series of increasingly unrestricted licenses while they become more confident on the road with practice.

You'll start by taking a classroom driver's education class and getting a learner's permit. Then you'll take behind-the-wheel driver's training and practice driving under the supervision of your parents. When you then pass the road test and become licensed, for the first year you can't drive with any teenagers in the car or late at night.

Driver's License Application (Over 18)

For those 18 and over, the process for getting a driver's license is a little simpler because no driver's education or driver's training is required. Instead, you may pass the written exam simply by studying the California Drivers Handbook. You will then be issued a learner's permit allowing you to practice driving as long as a licensed driver 18 or older is in the passenger seat with you. When you're ready, take the driving test and get your full license.

To begin, make an appointment at your local DMV office. If you prefer to fill out your application paperwork prior to your appointment, call (800) 777-0133 to request that Form DL 44 be mailed to you.

At Your Appointment

Here's what you need to be prepared to do on your driver's license appointment day:

* Turn in your completed form DL 44.

* Have your thumbprint taken.

* Have your picture taken.

* Give your Social Security number.

* Have proof of your birth date and your legal presence in the United States.

* Give your true full name.

* Pay the $26 application fee.

* Pass a vision exam.

* Pass a traffic laws and sign test.

Traffic Laws and Sign Test

This multiple-choice test will determine your knowledge of traffic laws and signs. You may take the test three times before you must start the application process again with a new Form DL 44. The DMV will not start any testing after 4:30 p.m., as they don't want you to be rushed to finish the testing prior to the office closing.

You may take sample tests to see how the written exam is presented―and to challenge your knowledge.

Driving Tests

After you've passed the written test, you will be issued a learner's permit. You may not drive alone with this permit; another licensed driver 18 or older is required to be in the car with you and ready to take control of the vehicle if needed.

When you've practiced enough to feel like driving is second nature, make another appointment with the DMV to take your driving test. This is the last step in the licensing process. If you pass your driving test, you'll finally get your license.

Not everyone who applies for a California driver's license will be required to take a driving test. All applicants under the age of 18 must take a driving test. If you have been issued a driver's license in another country but never before in the United States, you will also be required to take a driving test. Most of the time, the driving test will be waived for drivers who were licensed in another U.S. state.

Driver's License Fees

California driver's licenses are valid for four years.

* Class C original driver's license: $26

* Class C duplicate driver's license: $20

* Class C name change: $20

I presume your permit is issued by the State of California? If it is, you've already taken the written part; all you have to do is take the practical driving test.
