It's not a requirement as yet! Same as you do not need to carry your driving licence.

It is recommended that you keep a note of your Insurance Company & Policy Number so that you can just hand it over to the third-party. A lot of Insurance companies now issue business card sized insurance details for this.

If stopped by the police, they will check their 'live' database, if not, they will issue a 7-day producer.

you don't need any documents but! i find if you do get pulled over you have more bother with a producer so i try to carry my license at all times as everything is now on central computer they'll know if your insured or mot'd

You do not have to carry any of the documents with you.
Its a lot easier if you carry everything in case of accident or you get stopped by the police.

Do you mean in the case of an accident? In fact, unless someone is injured you don't have to give your insurance details at all. However, it simplifies matters if you have a note of your insurer's name and address with you. I keep a portion of their letterhead in the car, with no identifying details such as name, policy number, registration number etc. on it.

The police recommend that you keep nothing in the car which might identify you or be of use to a thief or fraudster. If they want to, they can check that you are insured anyway, or even issue you with a request to produce your documents at the nick.

You don't have to carry the certificate with you but you can't give the details over the phone either. If you are stopped by the Police and they can't verify everything they need to no by their computer links then you will be issued with a "producer" which means you have 7 days to produce the documents at a Police Station of your choice

You are actually supposed to carry your documents, but if stopped and you don't have them the police would give you a "producer".
This means producing your documents at your local police station within 7 days.

you don't have to, some do to save time if involved in an accident, the police can access a cars insurance and mot status remotely so do not need to check these
