my son has just gotten his insurance, and he is 17. I wanted to know if he needs to be on the insurance if he does not own a car. all the cars are under my name and my wifes, and he only drives if he really needs to, nothing more. Does he have to be on insurance or not?

Yes unfortunately he needs to be on the insurance. If he is not on the insurance, then if he gets into a car accident he has NO protection. So it is best that you put him onto the insurance. |

in the united states no you would not have too, if he is driving it some of the time, if he is the only driver yes you would, if he would wreck it and you have full coverage, it would cover your vehicle they would just have you exclude him from being a driver on your vehicles, then you would have a problem after that if he was driving, most insurance companies have a video that the new driver can watch and it would bring the premium down, and basically the insurance that you would put him on with your policy would be a heck of a lot cheaper, i just moved my policy from my parents when they divorced and i turned 20 and it went up about 200 dollars a month and i went from full coverage to liability, the company that my parents have erie wouldnt take me on my own |

Your premium will go up if you have a licensed teenage driver whether he has his own car or not. You probably don't have to report him, but if he crashes your car and they find out he was driving, you'll probably be in big trouble. |

It is very expensive to insurance a new driver, especially if your son is only 17. However it is illegal to drive with no insurance (Well definitely in the UK it is). If your son was to crash into another person and hurt them or damage their car with no insurance he would get into big trouble! |
