my daughter has bought a car and for insurance she has insured it under her mums name with her a named driver . I called the insurance company to ask was she allowed to drive the car alone and they told me that have no real guidelines on it and will only go on whatever the police say ,
Do we need to switch the car into her mums name and have her a main driver
The insurance company are quite happy to accept the money for the policy and have offered a policy based on her mum as main policy holder and my daughter as named driver , i did ask them but they seemed not to kmow
there is about a 5000 euro difference between having her own policy and one as named driver .

Well, when i first got my license, my mum owns my car and she was the insurance policy holder and I was just a named driver... it makes no difference I don't think, as long as your daughter is definately named on it.
We recently changed our policy and now I am the policy holder, again, on my mum's car and my mum is not named.
I think the main thing is that it is all legal as long as her name is on the policy somewhere. |

the policy holder needs to be the main user and the registered keeper of the vehicle, if this is the mum then this is fine, if not the daughter will need to be the policyholder. For UK policies (as I am not entirely sure about EU policies) if there is a claim and it comes to light that the policyholder is not the registered keeper or the main user then the policy could be null and void and you will not be paid out for the claim and could also get convicted of driving without insurance. Its best for your daughter to be the policyholder/ registered keeper anyway as this will enable her to build up her own NCB, and the price of her next years policy should drop quite a lot when she earns her 1st year.
Its best to shop around for prices rather than just amending your current one as you may be able to get a better deal |

Firstly, do your insurers know that the policy holder is not the registered keeper?
And secondly, if there's 5,000 Euros difference if insured correctly without 'fronting', then I'd get a quote from elsewhere. |
