Invalid Car Insurance?

Invalid Car Insurance?

Hi, I was involved in a accident recently and I am worried about what to do regarding the claim? I have withheld information from my insurer, which I know, if checked will invalidate the third party claim. I built up 6 points in my first two years of driving and had to retake my test. I didn't tell my insurer about this as I had a BMW that cost a fortune to insure and I wouldn't have been unable to run it if they were told. Anyway the lie continued as I didn't know how to correct it, and I have since built 6 years no claims and have a clean licence now, but the retake was less then five years ago. Now a third party is making a claim for repairs and the bill from the insurer has come through at about £3k. I haven't sent the accident form back as I don't want my insurer to check my details.

If admit liability to my insurer and offer to pay the money directly, what will happen? Is it likely they will check my licence details if I do this? Is it likely they will check them if I ask them to payout? If I pay the costs now, is it possible for me to be insurance black listed?

I know that I have done wrong and I want to put it right, but need some advice.
Additional Details
Thanks for your quick replies! I know the insurer will invalidate the claim if I try to make them pay. They are already involved now. So if I call them and offer to give my debit card details to settle the claim, and tell them it's because I don't want to loose my no claims, will this be the end of it? It will cost me £3k so an expensive lesson, but I can't afford to loose my licence for this.

Whoops, in the S@@@ aint ya.

Nothing you can do - you can try and claim and hope they don't find out or you can come clean and pay.
If you claim and they find out then they obviously will not pay and may well try and do you for giving false information and then the police will do you for having no insurance.
You could also be blacklisted.

The choice is yours - whatever you do you are going to have to pay somehow.

You have also commited the offence of obtaing insurance by deception so your policy was void from day one! This is an absolute offence carrying 6 points, fine, possible custodial senence. Understood that you lied to save money, however, those who commit offences deserve to be punished. Why should innocent drivers subsidise those who knowingly break the law? You must own up to what you have done and take the consequences. The old adage, 'if you can't do the time, don't do the crime', comes to mind.

If you have given wrong information then putting it bluntly i dont want to help. What you have done is wrong and you are trying to get out of the S***. So i wont give any advice. You have broken the law, you have driven with no insurance, you have committed fraud and as other responder say you have put up everyones insurance premium. I personally hope they find out and you end up with 6 points for no insurance and i also hope it costs you dearly. If i knew where you lived and your real name i would give this posting to your insurance company and local police.

I know you say you are not a bad person.

but using the excuse of "i couldn't afford it " to break a string of laws just makes it worse for you. It sounds like you are trying to justify what you did.

Just phone the insurance company and admit the lot. Anything else is not "puttng it right" which you seem keen to do

however, you still seem keen to break the UK law..."then I will insure elsewhere wen the insurance is due " You have to tell them as soon as you have points, not at the end of a term. So you will continue to break the law if you don't tell them all now, regardless of what you plan to tell your next insurance company.

Not every claim gets investigated to this degree, if its a straightforward accident then you have a slim chance of it being checked. It would be different if, for example, it was for the third car you'd had stolen in a five year period or if you had been involved in an accident where someone was badly injured.

Good luck

I've had 3 accidents where people have hit me, either in my own car or a company vehicle, in the last 10 years and one car stolen, I have never once been asked for my licence by the insurance company.

You've got nothing to worry about. The insurance company checks your driving record every time you renew. Whether you knew it or not, you were already being rated for the points.

There's no need to mention it to them, just go about the claim process as normal.

One more thing, if they tell you they're not going to provide coverage based on something that happened five years ago you've got a huge amount of money coming to you. They'd have to refund every penny of the premiums they've collected as they weren't ever providing the coverage you were paying for. An attorney would love it if they said they weren't going to provide coverage AND they wanted to keep your premiums, that has "bad faith" written all over it. I'm sure just mentioning that term would change their tune. Bad faith from an insurance provider is worth big bucks to you and an attorney.

While I understand the sentiments by the morality police in this forum they're underestimating the insurance company's breadth of knowledge, don't worry, he's already been paying for it. Your rates might be affected by late payments on your Macy's card last year, they certainly know about your driving record.

If you offer to pay it yourself and don't involve your insurance company, you should be ok. otherwise you wont be insured as you lied on your information. and will have to pay higher premiums in the future, so try and settle without involving your insurance company.

wish i could tell you different but insurance companies love this kind of siuation as you are giving them a cop out ..and they will take it ..just tell them ..as this moment in time you really have no choice ..take a deep breath and good luck

If you didn't want to use your insurance, you should have just paid the repairs and stuff out of your own pocket from the beginning.

If you give false insurance information, and don't turn in the paperwork on time, they will automatically suspend your license. At least that's the way it works in the US.

I'm in the UK, and I'd agree with Gabriel. There's no way they'll nail you after six claim free years - they've had that much money off you by now that you've more than earned the right to make a claim. It's a sad fact that you hate driving, but there you go.
I know that morally, this answer will be unpopular, but that's what I'd do (although I wouldn't have had the nerve to lie in the beginning).
Don't start 'fessing up now, your insurers could prosecute or try & claim for the value of premiums you should have paid up until now.

Re your added comment: A claim is already in progress: You can't now offer to pay & ask the insurers to 'forget' it - they don't work that way. I think that although you may be in the sh** by saying nothing IF you get caught, I can bloody well guarantee that you'll be in a serious amount of trouble if you now try & negotiate a settlement. Just let it ride & if the worst comes to the worst, then plead ignorance - 6 years is a long time in insurance, I'm pretty sure that the insurance companies are seriously limited on both the info they can keep on file about you & the length of time they can keep it for.

For car insurance the best way to get a low rate is do a policy comparison on car policies. Make sure that you pick similar policies with the same limits, auto make, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.

What I usually recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have lots of insurers and will give many prices on car insurance polices.
