If you have comprehensive cover on your own car, with a full licence, are you insured to drive somebody else's car with their permission?
Please settle an argument for me!

This clause always used to be included in UK and Irish insurance (but you would only be insured third party) Many insurance companies don't offer it now as people used to get cheap insurance on a small car and then drive their friends and relatives higher risk vehicles. The only way is to check your insurance papers. |

Not unless you have requested a 'Driving Others Cars' extension to your policy. A couple of frequently asked questions from the Top Quote Direct site:
Q. Does Comprehensive Cover mean I have Open Driving?
A. No! This is a common myth. Open driving must be specifically requested of, and agreed by, your insurance company.
Q. What is DOC?
A. DOC means Driving Other Cars. Where this is granted on a policy it allows the policy holder to drive another private car that is not owned, or hired to, him/her. Some underwriters exclude spouse's and employer's vehicles. If DOC has been granted, the policy holder is only covered by third party while driving these vehicles. |

I can only answer absolutely in America but I'm betting it's the same over there.
If you have permissive use (that means as long as you didn't steal it) you're insurance is called excess, in laymans terms, secondary, to what is on the car to begin with. If you've got collision (covers damage to the car your driving) and property damage (covers other people's property that you hit) on your own car, but the car you're driving doesn't have those coverages then your coverage would take effect. |
