I have a near-mint 97 grand marquis that i just invested $500 recently, and $700 a few months ago. My parents are declaring bankruptcy in a few months, so I need to switch it into my name.
However, that would kick me off of their insurance. Right now I pay $90-$110 per month (it changes every month), but my friends pay $50. I looked online to see how much it would be for me to be on my own insurance, and its like $300 or something on geico.
First of all, why do I pay twice the amount as my friends, when some of them have tickets or brand new cars their parents lease them, and I have a perfect record and a 12 year old car?
Second, is $250-$300/mo for me steep or the norm? We're talking about at car valued around $2200 here, and I'm talking $250 for nothing but PLD.
Third, what are some cheap places to get insurance? Some of my friends drive without insurance, but I definitely don't want to do that. However, I'm not sure if I can afford to pay three times as much as I do now..
Additional Details
We all have PLD only. Except that I pay like $15 extra to have $500 accidental (i think thats what its called... the one that protects against our tree falling on it and crap like that) and I might even have a $500 deductible.

You'll find cheaper than that. Make sure you specify "collision only".
That means you'll be shifting some of the risk from your insurer onto you.

You don't say what kind of coverage. Full (expensive) or liability only (cheap).

Again for what coverage? Much of the cost comes from the fact that you are young (probably under 25). People under 25 have the same accident rate as people over 85 !!! (yes very high rate).
