I would like to know if an SUV (a Jeep Grand Cherokee actually) is considered a truck or a passenger car when obtaining license plates in Missouri. I currently have car plates and would like to know if I will be able to just transfer them to my new Jeep or if I will need to get new truck plates. Thanks for any help!!

Sports Utility Vehicles, and for that matter, motor homes, although built on a truck chassis, are considered passenger cars and not trucks. They carry people for the most part, not cargo. |

Note: I do not have facts on this, but in my state I went from a Monte Carlo to a Ford Explorer and transfered my plates without any problems. Most, refer to an SUV as a truck more than a car. Hope that helps, enjoy your new truck. |

You should be able to license your Jeep as a passenger car. |

In most states SUV's are registered as passenger cars because they are designed to carry people and not pay loads. I know of no state that requires commercial (truck) tags on them unless they are being used for transporting people for hire. |

Truck because i gets low gas mileage. Auto manufacturers are required to reach a minimum mileage performance (averaged over all models) on cars but not on trucks. SUVs with high gas mileages (Toyoto Matrix) are called "station wagons" and classes as cars. |
