Is it illegal to be a named driver on my dads car?

Hello,

(ANS) NOTHING!! that's 100% totally within the UK insurance laws. Provided you as the second named driver are the holder of a full drivers license, I cannot see anything wrong with this.

**you will only be put in jail if you are arrested for a known offense. Such as for example death by dangerous driving.

**If you are stopped by the police these days the first thing they will want to know is :- a) are you insured to drive the vehicle b) is the car fully taxed c) are you under the influence of drink or drugs. d) do you have a full valid UK drivers license.

**Minor road traffic offenses usually receive a fixed penalty notice i.e. a monetary fine or points on your license or sometimes both. Rather than waste police time taking you to court for the issue.

Its not illegal what so ever!!! It is perfectly acceptable to be a named driver on your dads insurance policy.

nothing wrong with that here in the UK and is cheaper for your dad than having nominated 'any driver'

BUT if you smash the car dad will ose his 'no claims' bonus,also you cannot claim any 'no claims' bonuses

it isnt illegal, but your dad will not be impressed when you wrap the car around a lamp post and kill his no-claims....

Just a point. if you are the owner/keeper of the car and the policy is in your dad's name with you as a named driver, then read the terms of the insurance, as it may be invalid. Your dad would need to be the owner of the vehicle on most insurance policies.

This is not illegal IF you are not the primary user. However, insurance companies get unhappy if you are the primary user of a car and you are not the policy holder. This is because the risk of accident may be different for you than for your father (usually higher because you are younger). They have calculated the premium based on risk of accident if your father does most of the miles and not you.

I believe there is no set rule on how they define named driver usage so check your policy. The risk to you is that if your usage does not match that of the definition in your policy, the insurance company can choose to void your insurance. The most likely time this would happen would be if you had a serious accident and the bill was large, because they would send an adjuster to investigate, who might do a little detective work to find out how often you used the car.

in your situation, it is legal.

it only becomes illegal when the main driver of the car tell the insurance company they are a named (second) driver.

No it's not illegal, why would you want to be a named driver if you couldn't the car. No problem as far as I see.

As long as your added into the insurance household it's not illegal. In fact, you are one of the drivers of the vehicle.

It's not illegal or there wouldnt be a place for it on the form. An insurance co CANNOT have you put in jail, if they could you would drop them and go to another company, bad for business.

It certainly is not illegal at face value, but read the small print there is normally an excess on the vehicle when ever the named driver is using it, this can be any thing from normally Â£250.00 Â£300.00 depending on age any experience in short it means if the named driver is driving and hits anything they are liable to pay the full excess amount before the insurance company pay anything so not so cheap as it first appears
