You can purchase a car but driving it on a public road w/o insurance is illegal.

Most legitimate car lots won't let you drive off a car without showing proof of insurance, and most states require insurance on any car you own.

Every car I've bought, I've called my agent and had them fax a card to the dealer.

Purchasing a car with out insurance is legal. Driving on public roads with that vehicle is illegal.

The illegality aspect comes into play here (in most states, I'm sure) in that that you're driving a car on the street without proper insurance on the vehicle. The police will ticket you for that for sure. Have your insurance in place before you drive off!

That's a matter of state law. Where I live, you can't drive it off the lot without proof of insurance. Most of the bigger dealers can get you a short term policy when you buy the car, if need be.

Most dealerships will have the car covered for up to a week after you drive it off the lot. I would look for insurance right away though.

If it's a "new" car for you, run, don't walk to an insurance agent and get it covered right away. If's replacing an insured car, or you have a policy now, it's automatically covered for at least 30 days, but don't put off reporting it to your agent/company.

No. You can buy a car with "drive out" tags which usually last a month. You have to register your car with your insurance in order to get your real license plate.

I don't know. I've never bought a car and not had insurance. If you already have another car or are trading one in, and it's insured - then you're covered. Just contact your insurance agent at the earliest convenience and take care of it.

In the UK you can buy the car but can not drive it on the public roads until the insurance is in operation.

I take it this question is from the US, In the UK the norm is if buying the car & the price has been agreed, depending if its a private sale, a private sale you can bye & drive away but if stopped by the police points on your licence, if a dealer sale they will not let you drive the car without a cover note, but it can be transported away.
